Tim Cook Says Apple Focused on Autonomous Systems in Cars Push

We've known about Apple's significant investments in self-driving cars for a while now, but the company has not clearly stated what there intentions are up to this point.

Alex Webb and Emily Chang reporting for Bloomberg:

"After years toiling away in secret on a car project, Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook has for the first time elaborated on the company’s plans in the automotive market.

"'We’re focusing on autonomous systems,' Cook said in a June 5 interview on Bloomberg Television that amounted to his most detailed comments yet on Apple’s automotive plans. 'It’s a core technology that we view as very important.” He likened the effort to “the mother of all AI projects,' saying it’s 'probably one of the most difficult AI projects to work on.'”

His statements are still quite broad, but Cook is setting expectations for a serious product push in "autonomous systems" in coming year.

Artificial intelligence closes in on the work of junior lawyers

We often talk about automation removing much of the need for factory jobs, truck drivers or low-skilled office labor. But even highly-educated law school graduates are at risk.

"At Berwin Leighton Paisner, a UK firm, for example, staff use an AI system when they work on certain property disputes. The system was developed by Ravn, a legal technology start-up, which extracts data from official title deeds produced by the UK Land Registry. The software checks these details so they can serve legal notices on the correct property owners in real estate cases.

"In the past, BLP would have pulled together a small team of junior lawyers and paralegals at short notice, then put them in a room to extract that data manually from hundreds of pages — a process that could take weeks. The Ravn system reviews and extracts the same information in minutes."
